Macroom coursing club
Macroom Coursing Club hold their annual coursing meeting in January at Blarney, Co. Cork with kind permission of Cork Coursing Club.
This meeting is usually the last chance of qualifying for Clonmel with a full Oaks Trial Stake on the card plus a Reserve Dog Trial Stake. The card also usually contains a 16 All-Age, a 16 2-course duffer and an 8 dog working members.
Our fixture for this season was cancelled due to the freezing weather over the holiday period. Our Oaks TS was ran at the Cork meeting and was won by Skellig Wave. Hopefully next year we will be in a position to host a successful meeting.
The earliest mention of Macroom Coursing Club that I could locate in the Irish Stud Book was from 1925 and a revival meeting of the club. See extract below:
“Macroom 18th November, 1925.
The revival meeting at Macroom was not the success it might have been. An unavoidable change of plans told against the meeting.
Carrig King and Round Coolehane, divided the Macroom Stakes (puppies). Mr. J. McElistrim’s Mulcahy beat Mickey Free in the final of the Open Stakes, and Mr. D. C. Dennehy’s Good Spirits won the Maiden event, beating Sargent Peake in the final.”
Macroom United Club - R. Collins, Main Street, Macroom.
“Macroom 9th February, 1927.
The above meeting took place in bitterly cold weather, snow showers falling practically all the time. The meeting, on the whole, was most successful, and good trials were the order of the day. The Trial Stake went to Nigger, who beat Truthful Lady in the final. Milestream Boy won the All-ages Stake, beating Speedful Gift in the final, and Pilot accounted for Recharged in the decider of the Sullane Stakes.
Macroom United Club - Messers. R. Collins, J. Cullinane, and M. Donohoe, Macroom.”
